Electron Energy Distributions at Relativistic Shock Sites: Observational Constraints from the Cygnus A Hotspots
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report new detections of the hotspots in Cygnus A at 4.5 and 8.0 microns with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Together with detailed published radio observations and synchrotron self-Compton modeling of previous X-ray detections, we reconstruct the underlying electron energy spectra of the two brightest hotspots (A and D). The low-energy portion of the electron distributions have flat power-law slopes (s ∼ 1.5) up to the break energy which corresponds almost exactly to the mass ratio between protons and electrons; we argue that these features are most likely intrinsic rather than due to absorption effects. Beyond the break, the electron spectra continue to higher energies with very steep slopes s >3. Thus, there is no evidence for the ‘canonical’ s=2 slope expected in 1st order Fermi-type shocks within the whole observable electron energy range. We discuss the significance of these observations and the insight offered into high-energy particle acceleration processes in mildly relativistic shocks.

The Electron Energy Distribution in the Hotspots of Cygnus A : Filling the Gap with the Spitzer Space
Here we present Spitzer Space Telescope imaging of Cyg A with the Infrared Array Camera at 4.5 μm and 8.0 μm, resulting in the detection of the high-energy tails or cut-offs in the synchrotron spectra for all four hotspots of this archetype radio galaxy. When combined with the other data collected (and re-analyzed) from the literature, our observations allow for detailed modeling of the broad-b...
متن کاملRelativistic Flows at the Hotspots of Radio Galaxies and Quasars?
We review the broad band properties of X-ray detected hotspots in radio galaxies and quasars. We show that their collective spectral properties can be unified in a framework involving frequency dependent relativistic beaming and varying orientations to the observer’s line of sight. The simplest dynamic model consistent with this picture is a slowing-down relativistic flow downstream from the ho...
متن کاملComposition, Collimation, Contamination: the Jet of Cygnus X-1
We model the observed size and brightness of the VLBA radio core of the jet in Cygnus X-1 to derive an expression for the jet power as a function of basic jet parameters. We apply this expression to recent constraints on the jet power from observations of a large scale shocked shell around the source by Gallo et al. 2005, which leads us to a set of alternative conclusions: either (a) the jet co...

متن کاملSpectral and Polarization Signatures of Relativistic Shocks in Blazars
Relativistic shocks are one of the most plausible sites of the emission of strongly variable, polarized multi-wavelength emission from relativistic jet sources such as blazars, via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of relativistic particles. This paper summarizes recent results on a self-consistent coupling of diffusive shock acceleration and radiation transfer in blazar jets. We demonstrate t...
